About IAT

The Institute for Advanced Technology (IAT), at The University of Texas at Austin was founded in 1990. IAT is an autonomous research unit under the Office of the Vice President for Research. The Institute supports the Army with basic and applied research in electrodynamics, hypervelocity physics, pulsed power, and education in related critical technologies.

IAT MISSION

Conduct focused, long-term, theoretical and applied research and development in electrodynamics and hypervelocity physics.

Perform independent, objective technical assessments, testing and analyses.

Conduct education for the Army and the Industry in critical technologies and applications.

Perform long-term conceptualization and technology integration using advanced technologies and scientific discoveries.

IAT VISION

To be universally recognized as a world-class university research institute, focused in specific areas of hypervelocity physics, electrodynamics, pulsed power and related technologies of critical importance to the U.S. Army and the nation.

To serve as the focus for investigating the fundamental scientific and technological issues involved in the development of a new class of hypervelocity and advanced electromagnetic systems, and to achieve this through intensive interaction with academe, industry, government, and other laboratories in the U.S. and abroad.

To articulate these and related topics of national importance, using a cooperative education program, to the Department of Defense, the U.S. Army, and other appropriate government agencies.

To serve in a working partnership with the user, developer and acquisition communities within the U.S. Army. This permits the development of advanced concepts and technologies that help maintain the U.S. Army's position at the forefront of developing advanced technological systems.
